Being a DJ
Now a days you have all varieties of dj's on the scene. Mash-up, Club, Mobile, artististic, hip-hop, Dub-Step, Wedding...you name it. There are guys who dress up like "Elvis" and spin. You know Elvis who happens to be my 7th cousin. Hahaha!...Had to throw the family tree into this. : ) Either way they all can be fun and just depends on what you want.
One of the most important parts of being a good dj is song selection. Even if your djing a wedding party and the song list was pre-planned by the client, it's still an important job of arranging the songs in an order that keeps the event moving.
I personally believe energy is important. I think if I'm having a good time and put that on display it projects onto the crowd. The worst thing ever was when I saw a dj sit down behind his table for the entire night, he looked bored and tired. Not me, I am pumped. I can't sit still. If you want some spunk you came to the right place. If you want the dude in the chair I'm sure we can find him.
Wedding DJ
I am a seasoned wedding mc and dj with many years experience in this particular category under my belt. There is another skill set involved in being a good wedding dj. First always ask your potential candidates the most important questions out of the gate before making a final decision on whom you might sign on. Check out Wedding 101 as they offer a good starting point.

Music
I am music nerd. My current ipod playlist is varied. I am not strictly married to any particuliar format as a fan or as a dj. When I was a kid I used to sit down with a pen and pad and jot down every song and artist I could think of in my head. I started with the "A's" Abba, Alice Cooper, Alice in Chains, Art Garfunkle...Ohhhh!!!...Here I go again.
This was before the web and itunes made this so easy. I always ran out of paper. When mp3's arrived I made a real list on my hard drive that went on an on for days.
My ipod playlist abbreviated--
Airplanes Part. 2 - Eminem & Hayley Williams
Babe - Styx (Okay don't make fun of me)
Beat It - Michael Jackson
Better Off Alone - Alice DeeJay
Black and Yellow - Wiz Kahalifa
Dancing Queen - Abba
De La Soul - Me Myself and I
Jackson's & Mick Jagger - State of Shock
Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
Ceelo - Forget You
Johnny Lee - Lookin for Love
George Straight - Amarillo by Morning
Black Eyed Peas - Imma Bee
Josh Turner - Your Man
Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind
Muse - Starlight
Frank Sinatra - Fly Me To The Moon
Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You
ACDC - You Shook Me All Night Long
The rest of the list is available upon request.
What I spin with?
It's changing every year. Now guys are using ipads as turntables. I was about to dive into that, but have put on the breaks as I have heard they have glitched up at major shows. It's a fun innovative thing and if I'm spinning a house party for friends I don't mind getting experimental. However when it's your Wedding Party, Holiday Event, Birthday, Graduation, High School prom or Movie Premiere wrap party I want it to always run smooth. Currently I have a Macbook Pro loaded with unlimited number of songs and have the option of hooking it up to a variety of external turnatable decks including a Numark deck with cd'js, Technic Vinyl Decks, and a M Audio Midi Controller.

Each set-up allows me to control the digital music externally via the Vinyl Decks or Midi Controler. Etc. This was once featured on Live with Regis and Kelly!..As demo'd by the late great DJ AM. RIP. Sometimes in the case of a Wedding Party I will often times have much of the music burned to cd and play them directly thru the CD decks. At that point I still have my computer on stand by with additional music library ready to go at any point. Really now with wifi and wireless internet I have been able to download tracks on the spot and have them ready to play upon request. So no more "I don't have that song, sorry." when I'm your DJ. Unless it's on your do not play list ofcourse!
It's your gig, your big day...you name it-- I'll make it happen!!
